During the African swine fever outbreak in Serbia in July and August 2023, ASFV was detected in environmental samples and in insects collected on affected premises. Positives were recovered from soil, feed, water and barn swabs, and from flies of the Calliphoridae and Muscidae families, including Lucilia sericata and Stomoxys calcitrans. Non biting flies were confirmed as mechanical carriers. The work identifies insect and environmental contamination as transmission pathways that receive less attention than they warrant.
The finding sits alongside the broader route analysis of Guinat and colleagues in 2016, which identified direct contact between pigs and contaminated feed as the main routes to domestic herds while recording aerosol transmission over short distances. Li and colleagues in 2023 subsequently documented a complete aerosol transmission chain between two piggeries under field conditions, with dust movement as the intermediate step. Read together, these papers describe an organism that reaches a barn by several independent routes rather than one.
The design implication is that air handling addresses one pathway among several, and its value depends on the others being addressed too. Openings that admit insects, feed handling, and traffic in contaminated material all sit outside what a filter bank governs. Filtration is worth what it is worth when the routes it does not cover are closed by other means, which is the same conclusion the integrated biosecurity literature reaches from the swine side.
