General ventilation design is the substrate filtration sits on rather than a separate subject. A filter bank alters the pressure the fans work against, which alters delivered airflow, which alters the ventilation rate the building actually achieves. Ramirez and Hoff set out the specific framework for positive pressure filtered barns in 2016, covering fan selection, static pressure budgeting and filter bank sizing. Janni and colleagues built a model for filter sizing and barn pressure dynamics in 2018, and Smith, Holck and Carman measured airflow reduction on commercial sites in 2019.
The sequence that follows from this is worth stating. Ventilation requirements are set by the animals and the building, not by the filtration, and a system that meets its filtration specification while failing to deliver the required air exchange has solved the wrong problem. Establishing the ventilation requirement first, then designing filtration that can be carried within the available pressure across a full service interval, is the order that keeps both requirements satisfied.
